The 24th annual Cahoon Tournament will be played next week on Tuesday and Thursday at the Burlington Ice Palace, and for the first time, the tournament will be streamed on MyHockeyLive.com.
This year, the stakes are higher than ever, with three of the four teams on the initial Super 8 watch list, which was released earlier this week.
The four games will be played over two days, with two first round games on Tuesday and both a consolation and championship game on Thursday.
The match-ups on Tuesday are as follows:
Game 1, 5:15 p.m.: Medford Mustangs (5-9-1, 11 points) vs. Chelmsford Lions (12-3-2, 26 points)
Medford is the lone team in the field that you won't see on the Super 8 watch list, but that doesn't mean you won't see them in the post-season: as champions of the Greater Boston League, they've earned an automatic birth to the Div. 1 North field.
Chelmsford is currently in second place in the Dual County/Merrimack Valley Div. 1 league, and can still win it IF it beats Billerica on Saturday and Central Catholic loses to Andover. In turn, Andover would then have to lose to Acton-Boxboro on Feb. 22.
DCL/MVC1 aside, the Lions are very much in play for a Super 8 birth, with a 1-1-1 record vs. teams on the Super 8 watch list. Chelmsford split its season series with Central Catholic, and tied Archies.
Win or lose vs. Medford, the Lions are in a position of power in this tournament...
Game 2, 7:15 p.m.: Framingham Flyers (13-1-4, 30 points) vs. Burlington Red Devils (12-1-3, 27 points)
...because they'll get one of these teams on Thursday. Which one, is anyone's guess.
Per MHL's RPI, these are the top public schools in Div. 1 right now; Burlington is No. 8, Framingham is No. 9 (out of 54 Div. 1 teams).
Framingham has won eight games in a row following its only loss of the season to Newton North on Jan. 9. They've sewn up the Bay State Carey Division, with a huge head-to-head win over Braintree on Feb. 3. The Flyers also defeated the three strongest teams from the Bay State Herget Division: Walpole (watch list), Wellesley and Natick.
Framingham finishes its season off the following week with battles against St. John's Prep and Xaverian. Getting at least one win in Burlington would appear pivotal.
The Red Devils haven't lost since Dec. 23, to fellow watch lister-Winchester. They're 11-0-2 over that span, but have played only four teams with winning records during that stretch (which does include a 7-1 thrashing of Arlington, a watch list team).
Burlington opened its season with back-to-back games vs. Reading and Woburn, going 1-0-1; they finish it that way as well, playing their two league rivals in their final two games (with a game vs. Arlington Catholic prior).
Thursday's schedule:
Consolation game-6:15 p.m.
Championship game-8:15 p.m.
