MIAA Massachusetts High School Hockey

Super 8 Breakdown and Predictions January 27th

Earlier today the Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Association created a Super 8 watch list that is compiled of 19 teams that have proven to be worthy of the Super 8 so far this year.
I broke down the season so far for all of these teams and who I believe will make this years Super 8 down below:

Andover: Overall Record 6-3-2. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 1-2-1. A win over Hingham helps Andover’s chances at the Super 8, but they need to take advantage of their next game against Billerica and a matchup with either Arlington or Marshfield in the Ed Burns Holiday Ice Classic.

Archbishop Williams: Overall Record 8-2-2. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 0-2-1. A very strong overall record is currently being hurt with no wins against Super 8 hopefuls. Being in the Buddy Ferreira Classic will give the Bishops hope until the season ends.

Arlington: Overall Record 8-1-2. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 2-1-2. Only one loss on the year and it was to BC High. This Arlington team has a serious chance at the Super 8 with continuing success as the season ends.

Austin Prep: Overall Record 11-1-2. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 4-1-2. One of the best teams in the state all year is Austin Prep. Their one loss came to Pope Francis and have four wins against Super 8 hopefuls. The Cougars are very close to a guarantee into the Super 8.

BC High: Overall Record 9-1-1. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 6-0-1. BC High is basically a lock for the Super 8 after dominating all of the MIAA’s best teams to this point in the season.

Billerica: Overall Record 8-2-2. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 0-0-1. Their only action against a Super 8 watch list team was a tie to Andover, making it tough to judge this Billerica team. They will have to have a very strong finish to the season to get into the Super 8.

Canton: Overall Record 12-0-0. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 0-0-0. Arguably the most interesting team featured in the Super 8 watch list are the Bulldogs. They play in division two, but have a win over a very strong Mansfield team and two wins over Franklin. It is very hard to leave undefeated teams out of the Super 8, so we will see where they stand when the season ends.

Catholic Memorial: Overall Record 10-2-0. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 2-1-0. Wins over Reading and Xaverian boost the Knights chances at the Super 8 with only losses to BC High and Don Bosco (NJ) on the year.

Duxbury: Overall Record 12-2-0. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 2-1-0. The Dragons are red hot after a win over Xaverian and a Green Cup Championship over Marshfield. They will be a participant in the Buddy Ferreira Classic in hopes of proving their case against some of the states best.

Framingham: Overall Record 11-2-1. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 0-2-1. A very strong record so far for the Flyers, but no signature victories to this point. Finishing third in the MHL Cup hurts them as well as they look for a Super 8 bid. They have plenty of big opponents left including a game with BC High.

Hingham: Overall Record 11-2-0. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 5-2-0. An impressive record both overall and against the states best for Hingham so far as they have a good shot at the Super 8. With a lot of tough matchups left, they will need to keep the wins coming in order to remain a top contender.

Marshfield: Overall Record 7-3-2. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 0-3-2. The Rams are not where they want to be at this point in the season, but still have Arlington and Xaverian on the schedule in an attempt to prove their worth.

Melrose: Overall Record 8-1-5. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 0-1-2. No wins against the states best, but Melrose has played all of their tough opponents to good games racking up 5 ties on the year. They have a few tough games remaining and will need strong performances to have a shot at the Super 8.

Pope Francis: Overall Record 9-1-1. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 4-1-1. Pope Francis will join BC High as a lock for the Super 8 with their impressive talent on offense. Their only MIAA loss is to BC High and will look for revenge when they meet again on January 31st.

Reading: Overall Record 7-5-2. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 2-4-0. Not a crazy impressive record for Reading, but they help themselves by playing a large number of strong opponents. They gave Melrose their first loss of the season and have played all of their opponents to tight games.

St. Johns Prep: Overall Record 4-5-3. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 2-5-2. St. John’s Prep is the only team in the Super 8 watch list that has a losing record. What is largely keeping them around is the tie to BC High earlier this season. They have no losses against non-super 8 hopefuls and have plenty of time to prove their case for the Super 8.

St. Mary’s Lynn: Overall Record 12-2-0. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 2-2-0. 12 wins already for St Mary’s is impressive with 2 of those being against some of the states best. They still have Austin Prep and BC High on the schedule, and strong performances in those games may be enough to put them in the Super 8.

Winchester: Overall Record 10-3-0. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 1-2-0. Winchester is an interesting team as it comes to Super 8 hopefuls with a big win over Reading earlier this season. They still have Melrose, Reading, and Arlington left to try to plead their case.

Xaverian: Overall Record 8-4-1. Record vs other Super 8 Contenders 2-4-1. A season highlighted by an MHL Cup Championship is what the Hawks have so far. Two losses to BC High does not hurt too much and they have no losses or ties outside the Super 8 watch list.

4) Arlington
5) Catholic Memorial
6) Hingham
