West Springfield, Mass.—The Springfield Cathedral Panthers remained unbeaten while setting a season high in goals in an 11-2 triumph over the Matignon Warriors on Saturday.
Cathedral (6-0-2) got a hat trick from Johnny Leonard, two goals from D.J. Petruzelli, and a goal each from Cam Peritz, Pete Crinella, Brendan Nehmar, Tim Zmuda, Cole Foster and Devon Tongue.
The Panthers two ties have come against Franklin, 3-3, on Dec. 18 and BC High, 2-2, on Dec. 28. But in its six wins, Cathedral has outscored its opponents by an otherworldly 44-3 margin.
“We got to come out and play the No. 1 team in the state,” said Warriors coach Chris Kelly following the game. Matignon fell to 3-3-1, and has just one win in its last five games. “We got to compete for a little while. They [Cathedral] are obviously head and shoulders above us, they’re a very well coached team. They’re going to be there in the end.”
Despite giving up 11 goals, Warriors goaltender Ben Parker still managed to make 51 saves. Kelly described his play as “unbelievable, lights-out.”
Cathedral’s goals tended to come in bunches over the course of the afternoon. Peritz opened scoring at 9:17 of the first period, followed 44 seconds later by Petruzelli’s first of the afternoon. Crinella scored at 12:18, with Leonard’s first goal just 16 seconds later. Nehmar’s goal in the final minute of the first gave the Panthers a 5-0 lead before intermission.
Matignon got on back early in the second, with Matt McPherson scoring at 1:37. The Warriors were able to tread water for much of the second period before Cathedral opened up a new rapid-fire attack, getting another goal from Leonard, this time shorthanded, at 9:25. Petruzelli had a power play tally at 13:03, followed 30 seconds later by Zmuda’s goal.
In the third period, Aiden Tiernan replaced Keith Petruzelli in net for the Panthers, but it didn’t make much of a difference for Matignon. They would add on one more goal, this time from Johnny Andrews, but Cathedral tacked on three more from Leoanrd, Foster and Tongue for the 11-2 final.
“The best thing we have is confidence,” said Kelly. “You never stop playing, you never stop competing. It [Matignon] is a small Catholic school in Cambridge, everyone knows one another, and everyone picks each other up. We’re here to compete, and that’s what we’re going to try to do from now on.”
The road gets no easier for the Warriors, hosting two home games this week vs. Austin Prep on Wednesday and St. John’s Prep on Saturday.
Springfield Cathedral completes a three-game homestand this week, hosting the Bridgewater-Raynham Trojans on Thursday and the Falmouth Clippers on Saturday.
