On January 5th, Thayer hosted Nobles in a matchup between two ISL teams looking to gain momentum as the season progresses. It was a goaltending matchup between Marc Smith for Nobles and Gavin Fitzpatrick for Thayer.
The early portion of the first period was dominated by Thayer, but when a deflected shot ended up on the tape of Casey Severo, he put in it on the backhand to give Nobles the first score of the game. Thayer was only down for a few minutes as Nolan Fitzpatrick gained the offensive zone and fired a wrist shot into the back of the net to tie the game at 1. Nobles turned up the eat after this really pushing the pace, but could not get the go ahead goal as the first period came to an end.
The second period began and Nobles was off to a quick powerplay that soon turned into a 5 on 3 opportunity for Nobles. Quickly to start the 2 man advantage, John Murray sent a shot through traffic from the point that reached the back of the net with help from a tip from Jack Cronin and gave Nobles the 2 to 1 lead early in the second frame. Not too long after, a shot from the top of the circles from Aidan Lyons beat Fitzpatrick to put Nobles up 3 to 1. The Nobles dominance continued as Cronin got a shorthanded breakaway to get his second of the period and gave Nobles a 4 to 1 lead in the second period. Jake Flynn stopped the bleeding for Thayer as his shot from the point found twine and cut the lead to 2 goals for Nobles. This insane second period continued as Nick Roukounakis found the puck in the slot to make 4 to 3 late in the second period. The final goal of this insane period tied the game at 4 as Reilly Moran fired one in from the slot. PHEW!!
The third period was the total opposite of the second as both teams avoided giving up the go-ahead goal and both goalies battled their hardest. The game headed to overtime as both teams looked to win the game in thrilling fashion. Moran and Flynn both generated opportunities that were stopped by Smith. Both goalies remained perfect through the third period and overtime as Thayer and Nobles tied 4 to 4. Shots were even as well at 26 each.
