Harkins Shines as BR and Shrewsbury Tie

BRIDGEWATER -- Bridgewater-Raynham and Shrewsbury both entered Saturdays game looking for their first win, unfortunately neither team got it as the teams battled to a 0-0 tie. It was a defensive struggle for BR in the first period as Shrewsbury peppered senior goalie Conner Harkins with shots from all angles. The game remained lopsided until BR killed a penalty early in the second period that gave them momentum. The period was dominated by BR and as the time expired Nick Jope centered a puck that was tapped just wide of goaltender Matt Sande. The third period was a flip of momentum as Shrewsbury dominated the pace of play and had grade A opportunities on Harkins that he denied. After multiple chances on the doorstep for Shrewsbury and even a few breakways to go along with those chances, the game ended in a 0 to 0 tie and both teams earned a point.

Looking forward:

BR has to be proud of themselves after this one as they competed the entire game with their very young group of skaters. Even though they could not find the back of the net, forwards Alec Wonson and Ryan Concannon had strong games generating offense with their speed to the outside. Defenseman and captain Owen Mccoy had a strong night as he tried his best to create chances out his own zone as much as he could. Senior goalie Conner Harkins was the best player on the ice and he is going to be called upon often if BR wants to try to sneak their way into the division 1 tournament this year. Their next game is against Portsmouth (RI) as BR tries to get in the win column for the first time this year.

Shrewsbury is playing their first season as a member of MIAA division 1 hockey. The team is coming off multiple division 3 championships and wants to be able to compete with the best the state has to offer. They lost their opener to Framingham 2 to 0 and tied BR 0 to 0, so it is easily said that this team has to find its spark offensively if they want to get things going back in the right direction. Junior goalie Matt Sande has been good in net when called upon, which is a bright spot for the Colonials. Their next game is against Natick, which will be another division 1 test for Shrewsbury.
